They did not walk along the river. Duvic led him on a circuitous route through the city that included well-lit streets where gas lamps burned. Along these affluent streets, it was almost possible to believe that the war and the plague had never happened. But then they entered an area far more deteriorated, and soon were beside the river again.

The docks were ahead.

"Just a bit farther," Duvic told him.

They passed a bridge that spanned the river, which was narrower here than at any other point since Childress had followed it. Things shifted in the shadows along the bank of the river and he kept one hand on the grip of his pistol, glancing warily back toward the bridge and into the pit of darkness beneath it. The water was black.

A shape emerged from beneath the bridge—a barge, piled high with plague victims, their gray limbs twined together, bodies withered and faces gaping and grotesque. Atop this mountain of corpses stood a thin, skeletal figure in a black cloak that flapped about it like wings. And it saw him.

Childress cried out to God and drew his pistol. He fumbled with it and the gun dropped to the ground. He flinched as it struck the road, afraid it would discharge, but it spun and then lay there, useless. A cold chill passed through him, the icy pressure of the bargeman's regard, and even as Duvic called to him in alarm, Childress turned back toward the bridge.

There was nothing there.
